The tulips keep on sprouting

As we are entering February, the days are getting a bit longer and the sun has been warming my little garden in the afternoon. This has given a couple of plants an extra strength to resist the cold temperatures of winter, but it also has made my tulips to start sprouting again.

The tulips seem to be growing very well

The cold January halted their growth after they poke out unexpectedly last year, but now they are growing again. So far three tulips have shown their tip. Since we are closer to spring I don’t worry as much as before, they are on schedule this time, but I will still keep them in check.

The roots are healthy too

I have been seeing the flower shops are selling a lot of tulips as fresh cut flowers lately. They probably get them from south japan where is hotter and its their time already or maybe some are winter tulips. Anyhow it is nice to see so many around.

I will need to move them to a space where they can grow

My only concern now is to get them a better place to grow. Right now they are at the rack, they don't have space to develop upwards there. I probably will have to move they out of the rack and get them a space. but I am not sure where that can be.

Hopefully they will grow and bloom nicely as the spring gets here. How are your bulbs doing so far?

  1. Lack of space is always a problem especially if you garden on a balcony! I am sure you are looking forward to them flowering in the future.

  3. Lovely to see your tulips. This is not going to be a good year for bulbs for me - I was too busy in the autumn to plant more. Still, I'll venture out tomorrow and see what I can find. Hopefully our gales and rain will have died down.

  5. You can bring those sprouting tulips to my house if you can't find the room for them. ha-ha I luv the way spring bulbs look when the first green growth pops out of the ground.

  7. Cute! I'm glad they are getting a good start. I noticed that our snake's head iris and some daffodils are up. We even had a few crocus blooming in the front yard.

  11. I get a big thrill out of seeing tulips emerge, the leaves are so plump, and they promise so much in the way of beauty to come. I'm glad yours survived the cold and have carried on growing. You are so ingenious I am sure you will find them somewhere to thrive.

  13. Tulips...so nice...sure is a sign of spring.
I'm guessing they're indoors, so maybe get them closer to the windows.
    We all need daylight.

  14. Your rack setup is interesting. The roots are exposed on the underside? Is this for drainage?
I don't usually do tulips, though I think they are lovely....our winters aren't always cold enough. (this winter could be the exception) My bulbs --mostly daffodils are starting to peek out of the ground. Spring is on its way!

  15. Hi Fer, we also have tulips in pots which have been sitting outdoors all Winter. They are just poking through the soil, even if the weather turns severe again I find that they can cope and go on to flower well in Spring. Good luck with yours.

  16. Fer, I will not see a tulip around this garden for at least 10 more weeks. Must be nice to start seeing life returning. I have to wait and be patient a little longer. Will be starting some seeds indoors soon, more of the new day lilies I hybridized this past summer. This will be my third set of hybridized seeds. Each year there have been surprises. Best to you on the tulips. Jack

  18. Thank you very much! I hope they will grow well, I look forward to seeing them out.

Diana ~ thank you very much! I look forward to getting your seeds.

Patsi ~ the tulips are outside, just that they are in a rack stored because I have little space.

Janet ~ the roots come at the botton of the pot by itselves. I guess they really have grown well. I put a paper so they would not be exposed and not get damaged from the cold.

  21. The daffs in the garden are about a third of the way up, on schedule for March. :) I love tulips but so do the voles. I must try to remember to grow them in pots as you do.
